[tweetmeme source= “brennels” only_single=false]I had a good friend and former colleague touch base with me the other day and asked me for advice on how to brand himself as a social media expert and or marketeer. And there are somethings that can help but experience in actually doing it is best. So, what are you waiting for? Get started.
1.) Personality – Let your personality and sense of humor show. No one wants to be sold to so share information that you find interesting and follow and connect with those online that you have similar interests. This will help you build an online relationship so when you are looking for support those you know you will be there to help.
2.) Value – What is your value? WCYDFMT? Most are looking for this acronym “What can you do for me today” So communicate your value by providing useful content. Notice I didn’t say “content is king” BINGO! – another phrase that is over used in this market, however still true. Writing and sharing information that others find valuable will help establish you as a leader or at least someone who is interesting enough to monitor from the sidelines.
3.) Knowledge – Ultimately, you do have to know something. One of the misconceptions about social media is that it is a stand alone marketing initiative. Wrong! Social media is a complimentary initiative to traditional marketing efforts. It helps to spread awareness but you must have something to spread first. So, having some knowledge about emarketing, product marketing, customer acquisition and or web strategy will be helpful in pulling together a social media plan for any business.
4.) Competition – The Social Media field is extremely competitive. There are hundreds of thousands of people out there that brand themselves as social media gurus just because they tweet, facebook and update you when they are getting coffee via foursquare. What many and really all of us are, are influencers. What we say may promote or influence someone else to re-tweet or recommend you. However, what I have noticed is there are lots of consultants and maybe only a handful of us who have actually had any hands on experience building successful communities, social media marketing programs and generating a following that builds brand awareness.
5.) Passion – Show your passion for what you do and tell as many as you can. I syndicate this blog through many social sites so when ever I post a new article, it is automatically updated to my Linkedin, Twitter, Plaxo, Facebook and other accounts that I have setup.
Again, these are just a few tips for branding yourself and can really be applied to anything that needs to be branded from products to services. Most of all have fun and enjoy what you do this will help build your brand because you are being true to who you are, true to yourself and true to those who find you interesting and this is the best medicine for any brand awareness.
